Skydiver’s iPhone Survives 14,000-Foot Drop, Stuns Owner
In a remarkable incident that has captivated social media, an iPhone 13 Pro Max, dropped from a plane during a skydiving expedition, not only survived its fall but continued to function perfectly. This extraordinary event has reignited discussions about the durability of Apple’s flagship device.
The Fateful Jump
Last month, Casey Flay, a 37-year-old engineer and skydiving enthusiast from Devon, UK, leaped from an altitude of 14,000 feet (approximately 4,267 meters) with his iPhone in one of the front pockets of his wingsuit. Unbeknownst to him, the pocket was left unzipped, resulting in the phone tumbling out shortly after his departure from the aircraft. Captured on video by a GoPro mounted on his helmet, the moment was both exhilarating and bewildering, yet Flay initially believed he had left the device on the plane.
A Remarkable Recovery
After landing, a search for the phone led Flay to utilize the Find My iPhone app, which indicated that the device was approximately four miles away in a forested area. Anticipating the worst, Flay embarked on a 30-minute trek to retrieve his phone, envisioning it in pieces. To his astonishment, upon arrival, the iPhone was intact, showing no visible damage and functioning flawlessly. In fact, a button that had previously been stuck due to a spilled drink started working perfectly after the fall.
“A couple of years ago, I spilled something on it, and no amount of cleaning could fix the side button,” Flay remarked. “Yet after falling from 14,000 feet, it’s as if it has been restored.”
Expanding the Narrative on Durability
This incident has not only gone viral, enhancing the iPhone’s reputation for durability, but it also joins a growing list of similar stories. Past reports have chronicled iPhones that remained operational after extended periods submerged in oceans or rivers, further solidifying Apple’s standing in the realm of robust mobile devices. Flay’s astonishing story serves as a testament to the resilience of technology in unexpected circumstances.
