Devastation Turns to Hope
Ewan Valentine was heartbroken when his 9-year-old Honda Civic Type R was stolen. His girlfriend discovered the car missing one morning, leading them to report the theft to both the police and their insurance provider. Frustrated by the slow progress of the investigation, Ewan began searching online for a replacement. To his astonishment, he found a nearly identical Honda Civic with a similar custom exhaust system, despite differing registration plates. The striking resemblance led him to overlook the possibility that he had found his own stolen vehicle.
Unearthing the Truth
“So it seemed perfect,” Ewan told Yahoo News UK. “I went down to the garage to check it over, but I think my judgment was a little clouded by how desperate I was to replace my car.”
After paying £20,000 ($26,800) for the vehicle, Ewan began to notice unsettling clues. While inspecting the trunk, he discovered a tent hood and some Christmas tree pines that had belonged to him, alongside wrappers he remembered from his old car. Ultimately, a familiar odor of beer—left over from an accidental bottle spill—confirmed his suspicions.
“I started driving home, feeling a little strange about the situation because it could all have been a coincidence,” he recalled. “So I suddenly had the idea of checking the satnav history. Sure enough, there was my address, my parents’ address, my partner’s address, and places we’d visited over the previous couple of years.” This revelation prompted Ewan to connect his phone to the car, which instantly recognized it without the need for pairing, further solidifying his belief that it was indeed his vehicle.
Police Investigation and Shocking Discovery
Upon contacting law enforcement, Ewan learned that the vehicle identification number (VIN) did not match his original car, as the thieves had gone to great lengths to disguise its identity. They had scratched the original VIN off the engine, replaced the embossed plate on the door frame with a sticker, and painted over the engine serial number.
“It was my car,” Ewan confirmed, noting that authorities later connected a laptop to the vehicle and retrieved the original VIN. “They’d attempted to override the VIN number in the ECU, even though that was tricky to find.”
