British Man Struggles with Extreme Dietary Disorder

A 35-year-old man in the UK is facing significant challenges due to avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), which severely limits his diet and overall quality of life. Thomas Sheridan’s eating habits have spurred numerous personal and societal discussions regarding the psychological impacts of such disorders.

Life with ARFID: A Daily Struggle

Thomas Sheridan’s relationship with food is anything but conventional. Diagnosed with ARFID, he describes the thought of eating fruits, vegetables, eggs, or meat as nauseating. His daily diet consists almost exclusively of two loaves of white bread, three bowls of Shreddies cereal, and a variety of Haribo sweets. This limited intake has forced him to rely on protein and vitamin supplements—specifically those that align with his strict gastronomical preferences.

Despite attempts to expand his diet, such initiatives have repeatedly ended in disappointment. “There was one time when everyone was reminiscing about bacon sandwiches and I thought I’d give an egg and sausage butty a try. The instant the egg touched my mouth, I lost my lunch across the room,” Sheridan recounted, reflecting the severe aversion that characterizes his disorder.

A Lifetime of Dietary Limitations

According to his parents, Thomas began exhibiting food aversions at just 18 months old. Despite their efforts—including recommendations from doctors to withhold food until he complied—Sheridan remained resistant to trying new items. Even during school, he would return home for lunch just to eat toast, unable to tolerate the school’s offerings.

Now an adult, Thomas faces additional complications as his condition impacts his ability to work and engage in a normal social life. “The last time I worked over a 10-day period, I lost 21 pounds,” he shared, highlighting the physical toll of his restrictive diet.

In a bid to address his condition, Sheridan is seeking to raise $8,000 for hypnotherapy, though he acknowledges that success is not guaranteed. The journey continues for this determined individual as he strives to transform his relationship with food.
