The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has announced a 50% scholarship for students who will maintain a CGPA of at least 4.5 every session, Siggy reveals.

Olatunji-Bello disclosed this during the matriculation ceremony for the 6,648 students admitted for the 2020/2021 academic session.

According to the VC, students in such category would be refunded N28,500 out of the N57,000 school fee paid per session.

The refund, she added, would be done at the end of each session.

“This is part of our efforts at making life better and easier for our world class students. This is also to encourage our students and promote healthy competition among them. When I was the acting Vice Chancellor some years back, we did the same thing but then the school fee was N25,000.

“We are also going to introduce a system where some of our students would be schooling and working. We are working that out with some firms and that would also help some of our students earn some money to meet some needs.

” We are currently ranked the second best university in Nigeria and the best state university in the country. We are not resting on our oars as we hope to be the best in the West African subregion and among the best on the continent in few years’ time,” she said.

The VC charged the new students to be focused saying “the distance between matriculation ceremony and graduation ceremony is wide but yet short”.

“Be careful about the friends you keep, the activities you are engaged in and shun vices like cultism, exam malpractices and others. We have the staff and the facilities to make you world class graduates at the end of your studentship,” she said.

The Acting Dean, Students Affairs, Dr Tajudeen Olumoko, said over 47,000 candidates applied for admission in the university and that the students should count themselves lucky to be admitted.
