Vigilante Justice: A Woman’s Reprisal Against Gang Violence in Haiti
In a shocking act of vigilantism, a woman in Haiti has become a symbol of defiance against rampant gang violence. After losing family members to criminal activities, she took matters into her own hands, leading to a dramatic and deadly confrontation that has captured international attention.
Empanadas Laced with Revenge
Haiti has long struggled with violent street gangs, leaving many families to mourn the loss of loved ones at the hands of these relentless criminals. Historically, the fear of retaliation has kept most residents silent, but one woman in the Kenscoff district of Port-au-Prince decided to break that silence. This street vendor, known for her popular Haitian pâtés, made headlines after serving tainted food to the very gang members that had terrorized her family.
A Deadly Meal
On what appeared to be an ordinary day, she offered dozens of gang members free pâtés as a guise for her true intentions: revenge for the violent deaths of her family members. Unbeknownst to them, these empanadas were laced with a potent industrial insecticide. Just minutes after consuming the food, the gang members began suffering severe stomach cramps and vomiting, ultimately succumbing to the poison before help could arrive.
The Aftermath
Local media have reported the deaths of 40 members of ‘Viv Ansanm,’ a Port-au-Prince gang with ties to notorious crime boss Jimmy Cherizier, known as ‘Barbecue.’ Following the incident, fearing retaliation, the woman fled her home, which was later set ablaze in an act of vengeance by the gang.
A Surrendering Vigilante
In a twist of fate, the vigilante reportedly turned herself into authorities, confessing to the poisoning. She claims to have acted alone in both planning and executing the revenge. As of now, it remains unclear whether she faces any charges for her drastic actions against the known criminals.
