The 7 things you should know about NYSC in Nigeria. Find out camp requirements and documents. Do’s and Don’ts. NYSC Allowance and many more.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country.  Since 1973, graduates of universities and later, polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps program for one year. To many it’s one year of exploring, making new friends, eating new dishes, finding love, making plans and volunteering. One the other hand, some folks find the whole service thing a waste of time and energy.

In any of the above category you find yourself, the very painful news is that NYSC is mandatory for everyone (I’m sorry). And the earlier you saw it as a great idea, the better. However, we shall help you discover some things you should know about NYSC in Nigeria before you finally go in. These tips will help you while registering and even in your stay in the camp. Let’s go!

1. Soldiers are not allowed to touch you

Soldiers are in charge of training on camp ground. However, no soldier is allowed to shoot or beat any corp member in the orientation camp. Nonetheless, they can give you some breath-taking punishment that will make you forget your firt name. Exercises like juggling, squatting, rolling, are their favourites.

2. NYSC “Allowee” is mandatory

NYSC allowance is compulsory to receive. No big boy or big girl in this one. If at all you didn’t receive it, you may not pass out of the programme. Receiving allowance is a prove that you are serving; to receive it involves a lot of clearance which proves you are indeed serving. If for any reason you don’t need the money, collect it and send it to my bank account.

3. You can’t go out once you’re in

No one is allowed to go past the Orientation camp gate for 21 days, sadly! You are advised to go in with everything you will need, and I mean everything. Foodstuffs are not allowed(your ijebu garri can go in though). Food will be served in camp but you surely will need to buy extra food in camp, trust me. So, you need to go with money. Sorry, I mean enough money. We suggest you approximate around N1,500 per day.

Oh, I forgot to say, most camps don’t have ATM so what you go in with is what sustains you for 21 days.

4. You can not use your existing Bank account in NYSC

Every Corp member is mandated to open a new bank account during camp registration. Not to be scared, it’s the normal “savings” account you already have but this one has to be new. As we know, no one goes outside the gate, agents from differnet banks will be available on ground to help with the bank registration process.

5. You can do your online NYSC registration anywhere

Sometime in the past there use to be some NYSC accredited centres for online registration across the Nigeria. But as of now, applicants can register anywhere of their choice.

6. Some things are actually prohibited on Camp

Everything is ofcourse not allowed in NYSC Orientation. Of things not allowed this few make the top of the list; spouse(your wife, husband or partner), laptops, visiting the opposite sex hostel, sexual intercourse, cooking and contraceptives. Do well to avoid the forementioned things or risk being decamped to your father’s house.

7. Pregnant and Nursing mothers won’t lodge on ground

Pregnant and nursing mothers will not be able to lodge in camp like the others too. They will stay off-camp and be going to camp for their registrations.

Things listed below are not compulsorily needed in camp but they are essential for your personal comforts and to avoid unncessary “beggie beggie”. If you really value your comfort and wish to enjoy your stay in NYSC camp, take my advise and consider going with these items :

  • White round-necked T-shirts : This outfit is worn everyday throughout the 21-days stay in camp. NYSC will only give you two, and bad news; they are of low quality and may not even size you well in the first place. So, you might as well take extra two to be on a safe side.
  • White Shorts : Our dear government will give you two pair of shorts. Do not also forget they are low qualities. So when it tears and you are feeling embarrased, you will easy change to a good one if you bring extra.
  • Tea/Beverages : This is very important for those who would not like the camp watery tea. So, you can take the camp tea, add up your extra 10 spoons and make the tea thick.

  • Treated Mosquito Nets : Man…you do not want to fall sick in Camp. You will need treated nets to help keep away those big mosquitoes in camp. I heard NYSC mosquitoes come with straw. That’s bad! Do not forget to go with rope to tie the net with.
  • Torchlights : Do not ever, I repeat, ever say you will use your phone torch. Please go with a torchlight. Thank you.
  • Padlocks : If you have enough provisions to dash out, please skip this step. But if not, go with padlock to lock your boxes and bags to stop camp thieves from coming your way. So many things can go missing and ruin your orientation experience. You are advised to buy a waist bag so you always carry all your money and gadgets everywhere you go. The rest can be locked up in your bag.
  • Toiletries : Toiletries such as antiseptics, insecticides, towel, sanitary pads, tissue paper, e.t.c, should be carried along to protect you from skin infections.
  • Power Bank : To enjoy your stay in camp and stay connected, get yourself a good power bank.
